PS2 BIOS File Names & SCPH Versions Explained

PS2 BIOS files carry SCPH model numbers like SCPH-70012. What they mean, which region each belongs to, and why region matters more than version.

What Does SCPH Mean?

SCPH is Sony model prefix for PlayStation hardware. The number identifies console revision and region. Emulators read region data inside the file; the number is a handy label.

Common BIOS Models by Region

USA (NTSC-U): SCPH-39001, SCPH-70012 — North American games.
Europe (PAL): SCPH-50004, SCPH-75004 — UK/European releases.
Japan (NTSC-J): SCPH-10000, SCPH-18000 — Japanese games.

Newer Is Not Always Better

Higher SCPH number does not mean better compatibility. What matters is matching BIOS region to game region.

File Format Notes

  • Emulators expect raw .bin — not zipped, not renamed to .iso.
  • Typical size ~4MB; smaller means bad dump.
  • Keep one BIOS per region in same folder; switch in emulator settings.
