The legal way to get a PS2 BIOS: we do not host BIOS files. PS2 BIOS is Sony’s copyrighted firmware — the safe, legal method is dumping it from a PlayStation 2 you own. See how it’s done →

Download PS2 Emulators

Emulators themselves are free and legal. Always download from official sources — random APK mirror sites are a common source of malware and fake builds.

PCSX2

The reference PS2 emulator for Windows, macOS and Linux. Open-source, actively developed, 4K upscaling, widescreen patches and near-perfect game compatibility.

AetherSX2

The best-known PS2 emulator for Android. Note: development ended in 2023 and it left the Play Store — existing installs still work, but new users should look at NetherSX2.

Needs Android 7.0+ and a Snapdragon 845-class chip or better.

NetherSX2

The community-maintained continuation of AetherSX2. Ongoing updates, bug fixes, RetroAchievements support — and no ads. The version the Android emulation scene standardized on.

What Is a PS2 BIOS?

The PS2 BIOS is the console’s built-in system firmware — the first software that runs when a PlayStation 2 powers on. Emulators like PCSX2 and AetherSX2 need it because it recreates the original console environment: without it, games cannot boot.

System Boot

Runs the startup sequence and hardware initialization before any game loads.

Region Config

Stores region settings (NTSC-U, PAL, NTSC-J) that decide which games will run.

Memory Cards

Handles virtual memory card read/write, just like the original console.

Hardware Init

Initializes the Emotion Engine, graphics synthesizer and controllers.

Which PS2 BIOS Region Do You Need?

The region of your BIOS matters more than its version number. Always match the BIOS region to your game’s region — that alone fixes most black-screen and boot problems.

RegionBIOS ExamplesBest For
USA (NTSC-U)SCPH-39001, SCPH-70012North American games — the best default choice for most players
Europe (PAL)SCPH-50004, SCPH-75004UK, European and Australian releases (50 Hz)
Japan (NTSC-J)SCPH-10000, SCPH-18000Japanese exclusives and region-locked titles
Asia (NTSC-C)Asia-region modelsChina and Asia-specific releases

Playing games from several regions? Keep one BIOS per region in the same folder — both PCSX2 and AetherSX2 let you switch between them in settings.

Set Up PS2 BIOS in 5 Steps

  1. Install the emulator from an official source — pcsx2.net for PC, or NetherSX2 from GitHub for Android.
  2. Dump the BIOS from your own PS2 using the free BIOS dumper tool. Full dumping guide →
  3. Extract the archive — emulators cannot read the BIOS while it is still zipped. You need the .bin file.
  4. Place the .bin file in the emulator’s BIOS folder (PCSX2) or import it through the app’s BIOS settings (AetherSX2 / NetherSX2).
  5. Select the BIOS in the emulator settings, load your game, and play.

PS2 BIOS Not Working? Quick Fixes

The most common setup problems — and the first thing to check for each.

BIOS Not Detected

Make sure the file is extracted — a zipped BIOS will never be detected. Point the emulator at the .bin, not the folder around it.

Black Screen on Boot

Almost always a region mismatch. Match your BIOS region to the game region (NTSC-U game → USA BIOS).

Keeps Asking for BIOS

The BIOS path wasn’t saved. Re-select the file in settings and confirm the path persists after a restart.

Game Runs Slow

Lower internal resolution to 1x, switch renderer (Vulkan on Android), and enable speedhacks/MTVU.

Frequently Asked Questions

A PS2 BIOS is the PlayStation 2’s system firmware — the software built into every console that handles booting, region settings, memory cards and hardware initialization. Emulators need a copy of it to recreate the original console environment.

Yes. PCSX2 cannot boot games without a BIOS. Place your legally dumped .bin file in PCSX2’s BIOS folder and select it during the first-time setup wizard. Our PCSX2 setup guide walks through every click.

Yes — AetherSX2 and its community successor NetherSX2 both require a PS2 BIOS. Import the .bin file through the app’s BIOS settings on first launch. See the AetherSX2 setup guide.

For North American (NTSC-U) games, a USA BIOS such as SCPH-39001 or SCPH-70012 is the most compatible choice and the best default if you only keep one BIOS.

NTSC-U (USA) and NTSC-J (Japan) BIOS files run at 60 Hz; PAL (Europe) BIOS files run at 50 Hz. The practical rule: match the BIOS region to your game’s region to avoid black screens and speed issues.

Put the extracted .bin file in the BIOS folder inside your PCSX2 directory (for example Documents › PCSX2 › bios), then open PCSX2 and select it under Settings › BIOS.

Yes. The same .bin BIOS file works in PCSX2 on PC and in AetherSX2 / NetherSX2 on Android — only the location where you place or import it differs.

The PS2 BIOS is Sony’s copyrighted firmware, and downloading it from the internet is copyright infringement under US law — even if you own a PS2. The legal method is dumping the BIOS from a console you own.

Nine times out of ten the file is still zipped — extract the archive first, then point the emulator at the .bin file itself. Also confirm the file isn’t corrupted or renamed with the wrong extension.

No. Every major PS2 emulator requires a BIOS to boot games — it is the component that initializes the virtual console. (The experimental Play! emulator is an exception, with much lower compatibility.)

Is Downloading PS2 BIOS Legal?

The PS2 BIOS is proprietary system software owned by Sony. Copyright rules vary by country, but in the United States downloading a BIOS from the internet counts as copyright infringement — even if you own a PlayStation 2.

The approach recommended by the PCSX2 team itself is to dump the BIOS from a console you own using the free BIOS dumper homebrew tool. It takes about 15 minutes and gives you a clean, personal backup that works in every emulator.
